Getting ready for Thanksgiving

Here are some pictures I took that half day of school we had before Thanksgiving. The kids helped me make turkeys to put up in the gym. The feathers had their names and things that they are thankful for. Some of the things that kids wrote: snow, my mom, the sun, spring, candy.....
They are doing a really good job sounding out words and attempting to write on their own. It is fun to see!

Music

A couple weeks ago I had the musical instruments out for labs and the students were learning about keeping a beat, etc. I had to close the door so we didn't disturb the other classrooms, but they had a terrific time!
John has begun coming into my classroom to help the kids learn a song for the Christmas program in 3 weeks. I am SOOO glad he is helping me out with this- as then it won't be mostly my voice that the entire community hears that night! He brings in his guitar, and the kids are just enthralled by it. They scoot up as close as they can get to him, and some kids can barely keep their hands off his guitar. It is really cute. After playing for a few minutes and practicing our song, he lets them take turns strumming the guitar, which they really enjoy. I took a few pictures of the kids all crowded around him. I have written out the lyrics to our song, and we practice it during other parts of the day, also. The kids are learning to recognize more of the words as we sound them out together, and there are qite a few of their sight words on there as well. So- it is not a waste of our educational time- the kids really are learning from it as well- and they are really excited about the song.....much more so than if I was teaching it to them by myself. I think I owe John a Christmas present for taking this big amount of stress of me!! =)

Sunrise/Sunset

The sun is rising later......I woke up at 10:45 this morning to a great sunrise.....and I see colors starting to form for sunset when I leave school at 4. This month will see a lot of changes in light- but the prolonged sunrises and sunsets we get around here are really nice- nothing like the 10 minutes of glory in Minnesota where you can almost see the sun moving. Here everything is a little more gradual.....and the late sunrise gives even non-morning people like me a chance to enjoy it! We had a volleyball tournament here this weekend. Two teams came from out of town, and I was able to see one of my friends from a different village. The kids had a dance that went about as I expected with very few people dancing, but they had fun- and the kids really enjoyed the glowsticks that Mom brought up for them!

Disgusting!

Obviously, I am not grossed out by too much....as evidenced by my large collection of bones, some rather ripe still when I collected them. Surprisingly that didn't gross me out at all, however, the other day when I decided I needed to declog my bathtub as it was barely draining at all, I was a little grossed out. I was pretty amazed by what I could pull out with a clothes hanger....and even more amazed afterwards that I had had a tub that drained at all! Unfortunately, my tub does not have anything to block things that go down, so I will eventually have to do this task again.

Another hike

Here are a few more pictures from when my Mom was here- we went hiking out to Nex Crick.

My Hairy Tree

Went for another walk today with my Mom...and I discovered the most amazing tree! It had stuff growing all over it, extremely thick branches, and HAIR. It is my new favorite tree.... So now you all get to see my hairy tree as well.....

Walking by the Beach

I went walking with my Mom along the beach today. It was starting to snow, and calm outside. We looked around at the ice pile-ups and the rocks, and my Mom even found part of a walrus skull! So of course I had to haul that home. It didn't look stinky, but that may be because it is frozen....I haven't attempted to bring it inside yet. I would like to show it to my kids though.
After tutoring tonight, I started putting together a baby kuspuk- actually turned out OK. I still need to put the little ruffles on the bottom and the trim- but I think I am going to look for some different trim than what I have. I also finished my first major assignment for my new class I am taking- yeah! I can't wait to be done! 2 more quarters.... My Mom is only here until Saturday- the time is going fast =( I took some pictures of the snow and ice....sometimes I like to just take pictures of the ordinary.

Well, I went out to the hotsprings last night, heading out about twighlight, so I got to see the mountains during a different time than I normally go out....too dark for a picture, though. We saw a fox on the way out, and another fox and a ptarmigan on the way back.... The ptarmigan just sat there near us for the longest time, just bobbing his head. He didn't want to fly off....maybe because it was so dark out last night. The ice of the river was kind of scary crossing, because we couldn't take the short way- we could hear open water that way, so we had to go way up one of the forks and cross further up. We couldn't see very far with my lantern- especially on the way back, and it kept making cracking sounds. We did hit a few spots with overflow where we sunk in, but only a couple inches or so...a couple times I hastily made my way towards one of the shores because I was unsure though....ice scares me sometimes. John wasn't sure where we were on the way back, but I thought I knew where I was going, despite only being able to see about 4 feet, and I did find our way back to the four-wheeler again. Glad we didn't try to cross with it- I would have been really scared on there trying to cross. The hotsprings felt great, though, and it was much warmer there than I was expecting- I never really got very cold- even getting out. Might have been all that geothermal heat....and the clouds. After soaking in the springs for awhile we headed down by the cabin and had a bonfire for a couple hours- cooked some baked beans and ate oatmeal cream pies....which is what I was handing out to the kids for Halloween. I still have plenty left over! The ride back was fun, though it would have been even better if the stars had been out and we could have seen the outlines of the hills. It was very, very dark out last night! I am having trouble typing in here tonight...for some reason, it isn't always typing right and won't let me fix my mistakes, so oh, well!

Costume Contest

Here are some pictures I took at the community costume contest. There were prizes given out for the best costumes.
